With a mission and statement in mind, on Sept. 1, 2009 a local pastor by the name of PJ Charles founded the food share at Lake Eola Park and in August of the same year, one of the parenting non-profit organizations – Straight Street Orlando. When Volunteer UCF partnered with the food share, weekly volunteering took off.

Volunteer UCF Hosts 8th Annual Knights Give Back Saturday

“It is a unique volunteer event in that volunteers get one-on-one interaction with the people they serve,” said Alice Neira, the current Hunger and Homelessness director of Volunteer UCF. “Unlike other organizations, where you may sort donations or refill shelves to help others indirectly, at the Sunday Knight Food Share we get to see the direct impact on those in need.”

On Saturday, 1,600 students signed up through Volunteer UCF for the 6th Annual Knights Give Back.

The event was first launched in 2007 and this year marks the sixth year that Volunteer UCF has held this event.


“It’s about making a difference, hearing how you helped people, or how I helped people, it’s always good to hear you helped someone,” said Khari Fischer, 19, criminal justice student.“Its one giant UCF day for students to all come together and give back to the community,” said Ryan Silverstein, Volunteer UCF student director.As director of Volunteer UCF, Olson looped in its larger army of civic-minded students, and in December she applied to be a part of the Clinton Global Initiative University, a program geared to getting grants and connections to university leaders working on similar global problems.

Volunteer UCF - Knights Volunteering to Stop Hunger Now

Volunteer UCF has provided over 3,000 volunteers, has participated in over 11,000 hours of community service, and has saved Orlando over $200,000.

With the thumbs up and funding from SGA, Volunteer UCF will host its first 24-hour long community service event in February 2015.
