Learn about the USC Neuroscience Undergraduate Program.

The USC Neuroscience Graduate Program (NGP) owns a humanvideo-based eye-tracking system, installed in the Hedco NeuroscienceBuilding, room HNB-13b. The eye-tracker is an ISCAN 240Hz video-basedmachine: an infrared light source illuminates the subject's right eye,and a high-speed video camera records a close-up movie of the eye; twofeatures are tracked in real-time on the video sequence: the outlineof the pupil and the specular reflection of the light source onto thecornea. The camera is mounted onto a motorized precision pan/tilt headso that optimal viewpoint can be easily obtained for everysubject. This setup allows the controlling computer to compute the (x,y) coordinates of the point of fixation, but with those coordinatesbeing in some referential that is linked to the eye camera. To obtaineye coordinates relative to the referential of the stimulus beingshown to the subject, a calibration procedure is used to establish amapping between stimulus referential and camera referential.

The B.A. in Neuroscience, which replaces the Psychobiology B.S. degree, is administered by USC Neuroscience. The program gives undergraduate students the opportunity to learn about and analyze brain and behavior at multiple levels from an interdisciplinary perspective. Neuroscientists tackle questions such as: how does the brain engender sensation and perception, learning and memory, mind and consciousness, and emotions such as fear, joy and anger? The program requires six courses in psychology, seven courses in biology, and basic science courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics.
