Someone told me about the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program - in which they help you pay for tuition, books, etc., and give monthly living stipends as well .. the only catch is you have to work in a in a critical shortage facility for two years upon graduation. This sounds like a really good exchange in my current predicament.

For those willing to work after graduation in areas of the country experiencing health care professional shortages, The U.S. Department of Health and Human services offers the NURSE Corp Scholarship program. The New York State Higher Education Service Corporation manages a Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) which guarantees student loans, offers guidance and provides savings programs to students and families. The New York State Association of Health Care Providers offers the Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship fund to assist registered nurses and licensed practical nurses with continuing their educations. Lastly, the New York State Nurses Association offers the Secor Scholarship Program, which is awarded to a member seeking a baccalaureate or higher degree at one of the accredited nursing schools in New York.

The NURSE Corps Scholarship Program is a selective program of the U.S. Government that helps alleviate the critical shortage of nurses currently experienced by certain types of health care facilities located in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). Upon graduation, NURSE Corps Scholarship recipients work at these facilities for at least 2 years, earning the same competitive salary and benefits as any new hire.
